The anti-rape condom...

"This is so brilliant! An anti-rape female condom invented by Sonette Ehlers… A South African women working as a blood technician with the South African Blood Transfusion Service, during which time she met and treated many rape victims.

The device, known as The Rape-aXe, is a latex sheath embedded with shafts of sharp, inward-facing microscopic barbs that would be worn by a woman in her vagina like a tampon. If an attacker were to attempt vaginal rape, their penis would enter the latex sheath and be snagged by the barbs, causing the attacker pain during withdrawal and (ideally) giving the victim time to escape. The condom would remain attached to the attacker’s body when he withdrew and could only be removed surgically, which would alert hospital staff and police. This device could assist in the identification and prosecution of rapists."

I saw this and wanted to post something about it. I'm honestly not sure what I think about this yet and I've been meaning to post about it for a while now to see what others would have to say about it. can think of several pros and cons but I'm having an issue with articulating my complete thoughts on this. Probably because I'm exhausted. So I might come back and edit this once I'm more rested or just make a second post as a continuation.

What do y'all think?

Happy Monday!

hmmm.....well in order for this to be effective you'd have to put in ahead of time.....so you'd have to anticipate you were going to be raped.

my brain hurts

Looks like a good idea, if rape is rampant in an area. I mean if you have like a 70% of being raped it looks like a plan, but in the US I'm thinking it would be a little over cautious.

I don't know what to think either, but if it stops rape it's got to be good.

Uh... right?

In theory it is a great idea. You would have to wear it every time you went out however. You also might not have time to flee as the idea goes and then you're going to have an even angrier man to deal with if you can't get away from him. It could make a bad situation worse or could be incredibly effective.

phairhead, or you could just wear it whenever you plan to go out alone as a safety precaution since most rapists dont attack groups.

Sage, it isnt overly cautious being in the US. Rape happens here more than people seem to think. I also dont believe a person can be too cautious for the most part when it comes to protecting one self.

Ginger, I agree. Could be a very double edged sword in it being a brilliant idea if it goes as intended but could also make things worse if you dont have time to get away.

Thank you for posting this.

when those barbs stick in, if it needs to be surgically removed, doesn't that mean that they'll be in far enough to cause bleeding? he'd get the blood on you through body contact...aids, stds, anything's possible there.. so not only would you run the risk of being beaten and killed cause you pissed him off, if you DID manage to live through it, you could be infected, and if it's aids, you're dead at a later date.

at first glance it seems like a really brilliant idea but then you think about it more and i dont think its such a great idea.

first, you would have to remember to wear it constantly. on your period? couldnt wear it since a tampon would be in place. plus who wants to have that thing in them every time they walk out the door?

next theres the issue of the theory behind it. he ends up getting hurt, withdrawing and giving you time to get away. if you cant get away or get to help then you've just pissed off someone and run the risk of getting hurt even more than you already would have because he may just beat you or kill you. what if youre tied up and cant get away anyway? then youre stuck there and hes hurt and angry.

theres a lot of variables that could make this good idea turn into something really bad.

i personally dont think i would ever use one of these.

If it needs to be surgically removed, I doubt a man will be able to actually cause any harm to a woman. Now I'm not a man so I have no idea, but can a man be violent with a barbs in his bleeding penis? Or would he be rolling around on the floor in agony?

It also looks hermetic, so if he bleeds, won't it just pool inside the cup?

I think in South Africa women get raped on a pretty much constant basis and I think this might be their best bet. What's the alternative? At least it gives them a chance that they wouldn't normally have.

The only thing that comes to mind about it being a bad idea is that women could use it for the wrong reasons, to get revenge if the boyfriend is cheating or if he pissed her off or something else.

Thinking on it even more, I think the men will learn to get around it, by forcing a finger in first... He'll feel it and pull it out.

Trinity: what's worse, wearing it every time you go out the door or getting raped?? (and I'm talking about the area it was invented for, South Africa, not the States)

I think it's a good idea if girls remember to wear it. . . Although (and maybe this is thinking into it to much) it might promote more raping in the anal persuasion in high rape crime areas. . .

The problem I have with this is for the girl who wants to punish the guy who broke up with her. . . The possibility for this as a revenge tool (no pun intended) scares me.

Nope not a fan of that. First of all who knows when you are gonna get raped. If you can sense that I think a more effective way to stop it would be to get the hell out of whereever you are. And what if it malfunctions and you get the barbs?
It could be used for sex with an ex however.

Hmm- I gotta say it's pretty impressive over all. But I have to be the downer and wonder about potential misuse- there are certainly some whack jobs out there...even women. Overall I think in a place where life threatening disease runs rampant and is often spread by rape this could most definitely make a difference.
And then I think that the rapist could just use the precaution of taking the victim anally. If they want to do it, they will find a way I suppose.

WOW. Really?!?

Great in theory. Especially in a place like S Africa where rape is constant.

My biggest concern with it, is that it could make a bad situation worse - as in a lawless country as it is, you wouldn't just get raped...you'd be killed for doing that. Not to mention, gang rape is so common in those areas. The first guy might get the worst of it, but the rest of them will make sure not to make the same mistake.

I don't know why such a thing wasn't invented before. I don't think the motive behind this is anticipation as much as it is prevention (although in some countries the rates of rate are horribly high and the fear of rape may be a constant reality) since to be raped has damaging, irreversible consequences. I think this rapist repellent condom is awesome. Thanks for the heads up.
